- The City of Chula Vista and San Diego County approved Otay Ranch's General Development Plan on October 28, 1993, covering tens of thousands of acres.
- Development began in the 1980s on land that had been cattle ranchland for generations.
- Its hub, Otay Ranch Town Center, opened on October 27, 2006, originally anchored by Macy's, Borders, REI, and an AMC movie theater, and remains one of the area's main shopping and dining destinations.

- Special taxes. Ask for the property tax bill and how long each special tax continues.
- Distance to what you use. Time the drive to work and shopping at the hours you would go.
